About this route
History & Origins The Early Days • Coaching inns on Wilmslow Road date from the 1800s as transport links to Cheshire improved • Many pubs opened when the suburbs expanded and the tramlines arrived from 1880s Student Adoption (1970s-1990s) • UMIST and Victoria University of Manchester students discovered Didsbury as an alternative to Rusholme in the 1970s • The original unofficial dozen was simply: start at Withington Metrolink, walk West to Didsbury, finish at the Oxford Road end. -
